Sejarah Perkembangan Komputer

Awal mula komputer yang sebenarnya dibentuk oleh seorang professor matematika Inggris, Charles Babbage. Babbage membuat mesin diferensial (difference engine) yang digunakan untuk melakukan perhitungan persamaan diferensial. Dengan menggunakan tenaga uap , mesin tersebut dapat menyimpan program dan melakukan kalkulasi serta mencetak hasilnya secara otomatis. Setelah bekerja selama sepuluh tahun, Babbage membuat komputer general purpose yang pertama, disebut Analytical Engine. Analytical Engine merupakan alat komputasi pertama yang menggunakan kartu yang dilubangi untuk menyimpan data.

Herman Hollerith pada tahun 1890 dari biro sensus Amerika berhasil menciptakan mesin punched card counting yang menggunakan punch card (kartu perforasi/berlubang-lubang) sebagai media datanya. Penemuan Punch card (kartu perforasi/berlubang-lubang) sebagai media datanya ini merupakan penemuan yang gemilang dalam sejarah komputer.

Pada tahun 1944 Howard Alken dari Harvard University yang bekerja sama dengan International Business Machine (IBM), berhasil membuat sebuah mesin komputer yang mampu melaksanakan serangkaian aritmatika secara otomatis. Mesin ini dinamakan Mark 1.

Seiring dengan perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknolgi, komputer pun mengalami kemajuan. Bentuk fisik komputer dari waktu ke waktu semakin kecil dan penggunaan daya pun semakin hemat.
